Verka Serduchka - Lasha Tumbai or Russia, Goodbye!
Wednesday, May 30th, 2007I added one category called Proud To Be Ukrainian, and I will post here what important events happen in Ukraine. There are people of our country who I am proud of. To name a few, I would say Andriy Shevchenko, brothers Klitschko, Ruslana, and now Verka Serduchka. This woman is actually a man, Andriy Danilko who has an extravagant scenic character of woman railway conductor. That character proved to be very attractive to public, and light Ukrainian accent added to his popularity.
Serduchka started with short humor speeches, then proceeded to interviews with famous people (like Oprah show), taking part in musicals, and then suddenly he started to sing! And his songs were on top of hit parades in Ukraine for years. He does not have a great voice but a lot of enthusiasm and energy. His songs are a symbol of never-breaking optimism and simple joy of life.
This year he was selected to represent Ukraine in Eurovision. This raised controversial feedback. Many people think that a man disguised for woman is a transvestite, and could ruin Ukraine’s reputation. But Danilko is not the man to quit his business. He went on and possessed the 2nd place in one of the largest music contest in the world!
Some people think that he sang Russia, Goodbye and proposed to ban him from making concerts in Russia (he is from Ukraine, but mostly lives in Russia, and he is very very popular there), but actual name of the song is Lasha Tumbai which does not make real sense (some say this means churning milk in some Asian language).
